Furniture Lighting, & Decor sat down with Juniper’s founder and owner, Shant Madjarian, and the M Lamp’s designer, David Irwin to unfold the history of the collaboration that launched the business.

THE DESIGN PROCESS OF THE M LAMP

Before Juniper, David Irwin designed the M Lamp for Design Event Presents, a local exhibit in his hometown, Newcastle Upon Tyne. At that time, it was just another regular lamp, especially that it was prototyped on a budget. However, because of David’s strong vision for the portable lamp, it won the best interior product award at the show. Afterward, he met Shant at International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) and pitched his product idea. Shant welcomed the idea and believed in the product’s potential to grow into something phenomenal. From then on, David and Shant worked hand in hand to introduce the newly-improved M Lamp, which successfully translated into Juniper’s first product.

THE M LAMP’S INSPIRATION & HISTORY

David envisioned designing a piece that echoes Newcastle Upon Tyne’s industrial aesthetics. He wanted to create lighting solutions tied to the past, before electricity and convenience were introduced. He reimagined all the way back to the 19th-century when workers relied on mining lamps to get their work done. Thus, the miners’ lamp-inspired M Lamp was developed. The portable lamp’s design is also significant to David as it represents the prominent coal mining industry in his hometown.

WHAT ARE THE INTENDED USES OF THE M LAMP?

The sleek M Lamp can be used to illuminate a dull corner, stand as ambient lighting, and help with tasks that need better lighting. But the movable lamp turns into limitless lighting solutions when you catch yourself using it for situations you had not imagined. These include small tasks like taking a meter reading, painting a cupboard, and replacing a light source in a dark room.
