DesignMilk Reflects on 2017 with Top Modern Design Processes

Love Me Not Pascale Girardin Sketches

Love Me Not Pendant by Pascale Girardin

2017 was a great year for new, innovative designs. For every great idea, there is a creative process that brings that idea to life. DesignMilk reflects on last year’s top modern design processes that proved to have a great reward.

From Skram’s Altai Side Table to Poppin’s Pitch Collection, DesignMilk delves into what it took to develop each and every design on the list, including our very own Love Me Not pendant light, designed by Pascale Girardin.

It all starts with a sketch; an idea that solves a problem or offers a new way to view an otherwise mundane object. It is edited and redrawn, altered and refined until the details are just right. More often than not, the process stops here. It becomes a dead end. Either resources are unavailable or other designs are pursued in its place. But sometimes, there are diamonds in the rough. Designs so brilliant, they drive the sketch forward. These are the creations that leave us in awe.

From sketching, to prototyping, to sampling, and finally production, there are sometimes edits and problems at every stage. Unforeseeable speedbumps and an inevitable struggle to solve each problem surface naturally when creating anything well-designed. But in these moments, perfection has the potential to emerge, leaving behind subpar ideas and techniques and forging something stunning.

Can I expedite my juniper order - love me not
Love Me Not LED Pendant Lighting

The Love Me Not draws inspiration from childhood memories of picking petals off a daisy. In French this is called ‘effeuiller la marguerite’, where this design gets its second name ‘À La Folie’ – to be madly in love. The organic shape is crafted from five layers of hand-formed, porcelain-finish acrylic, so no two fixtures are identical. Suspended individually or in a cluster, Love Me Not (À La Folie) delivers a whimsical display of art and light.

The porcelain-finish acrylic by famed German manufacturer Evonik offers a unique material that exemplifies the lasting quality of ceramic while offering the optical performance required for a functional light pendant. Measuring 36″ in width the Love Me Not | A La Folie can be suspended at varying angles to give the impression of weightlessness when clustered in a group. Each pendant produces up to approximately 3000 lumens.
