FAQ: Choosing Modern Under-Cabinet Lighting

Every kitchen design is different, and with that comes custom cabinetry, dimensions, materials, and countertops to consider. When choosing your modern under-cabinet lighting, it’s important to look for three things: minimal design, customizable lighting features, and modularity. Following these steps will make sure you choose the right lighting for your modern kitchen space.

1. Minimal Design

Under-cabinet lighting is used to accent the kitchen (wait for it) under your cabinets. Usually, lighting is either inset or sits very close to the bottom of your cabinetry and shines light down toward the countertops below. The design of this lighting should be low-profile as to not distract from other show stopping elements of your modern kitchen’s design. By using high-quality materials in a low profile, the lighting will accent the luxury aesthetic without becoming demanding in the space. We recommend choosing lighting that stands off from the cabinet under 2 inches and avoiding chunky lighting installations.

2. Customizable Lighting Features

Since every kitchen is unique, it’s important to choose lighting that is customizable to your space. To match the lighting’s color temperature to the rest of your space, choose a lighting system that has a variety of options. Usually, kitchens are equipped with color temperatures around 3000K-3500K. This white light is perfect for preparing food in a functional and clean space, while maintaining a small amount of amber hue for a comforting aesthetic.

Another thing to consider is lens finishes of your linear LED lighting, specifically frosted or clear. Clear lenses help direct lighting for a more narrow beam of light. This is helpful in task areas, such as food-prep locations. However, with glossy countertops, you may face glare issues of the lighting reflecting too harshly. We recommend clear lenses for matte or semi-matte finished countertops. When it comes to glossy countertops, a frosted lens, although more diffused with a wider beam angle, still gives off the same brightness and would resolve the issue of glare.

3. Modularity

As dimensions change and cabinetry adjusts to your space, so should your lighting. Choose lighting that’s extendable and adjustable. With the ability to add and subtract length, you’ll find comfort in knowing that your cabinetry can be a custom dimension and you’ll still have the correct proportions of lighting.

Modern Under-Cabinet Lighting

With its ½-inch diameter profile, the THIN Surface Mount Under-Cabinet Light offers minimal design with plenty of light output. Standoff options include 1.75”, and 3.5” for a low-profile lighting solution. The THIN System offers customizable options such as color temperature, lens finish, length, and the ability to join LED light segments together for custom dimensions. Juniper is able to provide corner pieces for uniquely shaped runs. The THIN Surface Mount Under-Cabinet Light installs easily to any material and LED light segments magnetically snap into mounting hardware. Since magnetic connections are made instead of hardwiring the light segments in place, segments can freely rotate a full 360° to aim lighting exactly where its needed and adjust as you use it. A variety of dimming options are available to work with wireless dimmers, or other lighting systems.
